There has been an interest for the past few years in quick DIY meals, or meal with only a few ingredients. This trend seems to have been inspired by two earlier trends. We have grown used to instant food, either as takeaway or microwave instant meals. And there has been a move towards healthy eating that emphasizes natural products. The interest in easy DIY meals means being quick without being unhealthy.
Asian food provides many possibilities for food that is reasonably simple to prepare. Most people won’t eat these meals every night, but adding a few Asian meals each week means a lot of attractive variations in what we eat.

Pork chops are easy to pan fry. Many Asian countries like to marinate the pork before frying. There are countless possible variations here. Cantonese chefs will marinate the pork chops in five spice and vegetable oil for at least an hour before frying. Other marinate the chops in soy sauce and honey instead. Even plain pork chops are quite good when pan fried. Serve with rice and salad.
Spring rolls – these are not exactly healthy on their own, but they are quick and work well with a healthy salad. Just don’t eat too many.
Beef stir fry – Cantonese chefs will stir fry thin slices of beef with black bean sauce (AKA black bean paste). Include some vegetables in the stir fry, like peppers, and perhaps serve with rice.
Thai omelettes – This is quite different to western omelettes, which are meant to be light and fluffy. By contrast a Thai omelette is crispy on the outside. This is achieved by frying the omelette in hot oil.
Noodles – We have the false idea that noodles mean instant cup-of-noodles. This is only the cheap variation. Asian noodles are more like pasta, and taste far better than anything instant. We can use these as the basis of a stir fry, and add vegetables for a balanced meal.
Asian Slaw – This is finely cut up salad with shredded chicken. We add some fish sauce and some lime, maybe some chilli.
Pork and green beans – This is another stir fry. The pork needs to be minced and cooked with the beans on high heat. Charr the beans slightly. Add some spice with garlic and soy sauce.
